Abstract
Abstract Evidence of a marine invasion has been found in the Westphalian B deposits of the Pas-de-Calais coal district, France. The marine beds are described and named the Wingles horizon. It probably corresponds to the Eisden horizon in the Belgian and Dutch coal basins. The horizon occurs in the midst of a sedimentary series that is barren and partly sandy; it has no direct relation to coal deposition, but throws light on problems of the relations between subsidence and deposition of barren measures.
