Abstract

This paper treats the following paradox: the question of the mythical origin of State and politics in combination with a reflection on the matriarchy. This was raised precisely and paradoxically in the mid-19th century when the progressive constitution of the modern Austrian and German state came into being. Two paradigmatic works will be compared: Franz Grillparzer’s tragedy on the creation of Prague and Richard Wagner’s tetralogy. The paper will not downplay the differences between the two works, but try to elaborate parallels and echo-phenomena between Grillparzer’s Libussa und Wagner’s Ring using three thematic approaches: mythical vs. political thought, opposition between masculine and feminine, the incarnation of the amazon.
