Abstract
With the story of Violente and Didaco, the Italian Matteo Bandello (I, 42) and the French Pierre Boaistuau (5th tragic story) narrate each on his side the story of a double wedding. First, the knight Didaco secretly marries Violente and a year later he marries with great pomp a woman of his social condition. Then, he suffers the terrible vengeance of Violente. Both storytellers do not see the same way the first wife’s behaviour: Bandello thinks that she cares for her social role; Boaistuau that she seeks to defend the rights of her marriage. This difference reveals two conceptions of marriage, that of Bandello refers to the vision of Roman law, that of Boaistuau to canon law.
