Abstract

Giordana Charuty, Love-Sickness. ? Under the apparent diversity of the behaviors and periods of life when this illness appears (the transgression of regulated relationships between the sexes, the suspension of social distinctions, the confusion of ages and roles), to be hyster ical is to seek to assert one's sexual identity by shifting the symbolic reference marks that are used to socially construct it. The coherence and originality of customary representations of this special destiny come from the relatedness of three definitions (morphological, psychic and social) of femininity and its shortcomings. Therapeutic rituals for restoring to hysterical women the sensual pleasure of their identity as women have been passed down from the Renaissance to the beginning of this century ; but other usages of the feminine collectivity can take the place of these cures for love-sickness.
