Abstract

SUMMARY. — The treatises written by Autolycus of Pitane, Euclid and Theodosius of Bithynia, when put side by side and closely analysed, show a remarkable similarity in the formalized style of presentation of the theorems. This feature suggests that long before these authors, whose works are the oldest preserved, Greek mathematicians had established strict methods and had adopted a formulaic language which was to secure lasting stability to Greek geometry.
