Abstract

Jurassic is known in the vicinity of Vistabella del Maestrazgo, Lucena del Cid, Argelita, Adzaneta and Villahermosa del Rio and now is discovered near Villafames, Borriol and Alcora as well as in the Desierto de las Palmas. Thus, the Jurassic is represented in all the Southern part of Maestrazgo, between Penagolosa and Mediterranean Sea. Generally, series starts with a dolomitic formation of very variable thickness and not well-dated age. — Towards E., in the Desierto de las Palmas, this thin formation, overlying directly the Muschelkalk, seems do not start until Middle Jurassic or Basal Upper Jurassic. — In the central part of Adzaneta, Lucena and Argelita, it can represent alI the Liassic or a part of it, besides Dogger and Basal Malm, by its great thickness. — Towards W., near Vistabella, dolomitic formation accuses a remarkable thickness decrease, as in the Desierto. It seems also probable its Middle or Upper Jurassic age. Upper Oxfordian, Kimmeridgian and Portlandian Fossilliferous Limestones ovely this serie, although they have been locally cutted by an erosion after the epirogenetic movements at Final Jurassic or Basal Cretaceous. The Jurassic series thickness variations, as well as the dolomitization and the lacune of some members is explained if it is considered that a furrow occuped the studied region: the «Southern Maestrazgo furrow». This dispositive has an Iberian orientation, and would be prolongued towards SE., to the Ibiza Island. The studied region belongs to the mountainous relieves extended from Penagolosa Massif and Mediterranean shoreline. This region appears without Jurassic outcrops in a great part of up-to-date published maps. Nevertheless, Fallot and Bataller (1927) showed limestones containing Titonian Perisphictids in Vistabella del Maestrazgo. Afterwards Jurassic has been recognized in Lucena del Cid, Argelita, Adzaneta and Villahermosa del Rio. I have just discovered it in Desierto de las Palmas Mountains and Villafames, Borriol and Alcora sectors. My investigations allow the establishment of the Stratigraphic series in these Southern Maestrazgo points and the proposition of a new palaeogeographical schema during this period.
