Abstract

IntroductionThe Joker is considered one of the greatest comic book villains and fictional characters ever created. The worldwide popularity of the Joker has led to this character's appearance in a variety of media, including cartoons, series, and movies, and on merchandise, such as clothing and collectible items. The present article provides an in-depth description of the Joker's complex psychological profile. MethodsThe character's psychopathological characteristics were determined through psychodynamic and psychometric analysis performed using information from different databases and media representations. This article also includes a discussion of the Joker's systemic relationships, especially with women. ResultsThe psychopathological description of the Joker is used to introduce a novel form of extreme antisocial behavior including different types of behavioral patterns and motivations, called the C.H.A.O.S. Syndrome. Finally, the article presents opinions regarding the current social impacts and symbolism of the Joker, as well as the most likely realistic version of the Joker in terms of real psychological forensic cases, with additional pedagogical applications. ConclusionThe Joker is a fictional character with a complex psychological profile. He is an interesting pedagogical tool to teach forensic psychiatry, as other fictional characters as well.
