Abstract

The new catalogue of the manuscripts at Zwettl which is being published by Charlotte Ziegler (3 volumes so far, Vienna-Munich, 1989-1992), as well as several recent studies, shed new light on the sources of the «Magnum Legendarium Austriacum» (GLA): this legendary, rooted in the Cistercian tradition, from the beginning of the mid-twelfth century on began to include many saints of the Austro-Bavarian region and several Irish saints. Since the earliest known MSS of the GLA were copied at Heiligenkreuz and since they were the models for those of Zwettl and Lilienfeld, the question arises whether the monastery of Heiligenkreuz was not the cradle of the GLA. The article also provides a detailed analysis of the content, month by month, of the legendary, as well as an index of the saints.
