Abstract

This paper examines the spread in the West of precious fabrics and art objects produced in Cyprus under Latin rule. It is possible to provide a picture reflecting the diversity of Cypriote production based on the church and princely inventories and books of accounts : sheets, liturgical vestments, altar cloths, silk textiles, gold-thread embroideries, chests and caskets, copper candelabra, glass carafe, wooden icons. The trade manuals and the Italian notarial deeds confirm the export of the luxury goods from Famagusta to the main western ports. Pilgrims and Crusaders also provide Cypriote luxury items to the treasures of the cathedrals. The spread of the taste of Cyprus in the West owes a great deal to Anne de Lusignan’s departure to the Court of Savoy and the visit of Peter I, king of Cyprus, to different European capitals.
