Abstract
ABSTRACT : The polemics that opposes H. Schuchardt and A. Meillet during the years before, after and during World War I, over the problem of relatedness between languages can be compared to that other dramatic "clash", when Schuchardt challenged the neo-grammarian positions in 1880. It was certainly impossible for all those who maintained that intercomprehension implied resistance to language diversity to comprehend his point of view. Surely, the great French specialist of historical comparatism sought to understand the "maître de Graz", but by placing the object of Schuchardt' s research within the domain of "la parole" and thus at the marge of the discipline, he reestablishes a division and re-creates just those problems that Schuchardt refused to recognize as being relevant in linguistics.
