Abstract

Françoise Dion : The Esau Complex : Diderot and his Brother. This article discusses Diderot's relationship with his father and his brother and draws a parallel with the Biblical story of Esau and Jacob. Like Esau, Diderot renounced his privileges as the eldest son when he refused an ecclesiastical career. However, the canon's hostility to the philosopher, justified on religious grounds, can also be seen as jealousy for their father's preference for his eldest son.
