Abstract

The figure of the champion is a constant of the written press in France. Arecurring feature of the sports columns, it cannot, however, be comprehendedexclusively through the medium of sporting results. The diversityof the forms of analysis inspired by the champion underscores the readinessof editors to lend wider significance to that which may appear at firstblush to be simply a performance or feat. This article examines the formsinvolved in this process and the societal role of the champion in a periodwhen sport in France took on new significance. The Communist pressplayed a particular role in orchestrating the visibility of sport and theportrayal of the champion. The range of publications the Communist pressoffered by means of a general news publication (L’Humanite), a sportspecificpaper (Miroir Sprint), and a publication aimed at a youngeraudience (Nous les garcons et les filles), generated a unique spectrum ofanalysis.
