Abstract

This paper discusses the reasons for which Goethe’s work, especially his aesthetic thought, struggled to be acknowledged in France. Drawing on a critical analysis ranging from the 1932 issue of the journal Nouvelle Revue Francaise entitled ‘A Tribute to Goethe’ to 1960s and 70s French thought’s position on German Romanticism, this paper points out two decisive and related reasons: the question of classicism – of our classics – that hinders a proper understanding of German Klassik and the French reception of Nietzsche that favours the Dionysian, ignores its close relationship with the Apollonian, and misses Nietzsche’s Goethean descent.
