Abstract

Aim of the researchIndividual psychoanalytical care is generally considered as relevant for adolescents in institutions, but its place and its links with other forms of treatment are regularly questioned. In this context, considering the psychoanalytical setting as a Triangular Space contributes to the articulation and subjectivation of the different areas of care. MethodThe history of the psychoanalytical movement testifies to the complex relationships between psychoanalysis and the institutional setting. However, today the evolution of psychic functioning in childhood and adolescence confirms the importance of considering the psychoanalytic setting. From the clinical description of the care itinerary of a fifteen-year-old, we explore the function of the setting in an institutional context. ResultsThe “triangular space” within the institution enables the subjectivation of the real and fantasised links between the individual psychotherapy and the overall care process. In particular, it helps adolescents to overcome the depressive state and the ambivalence, and enables the establishment of sexual identity. DiscussionThe psychoanalytical setting in institutions needs to be considered in the light of its dynamic links with the care provided as a whole. Considering it in this light contributes considerably to its therapeutic efficacy in institutional settings. ConclusionIndividual psychoanalytical psychotherapy with teenagers is a relevant institutional tool to effectively support or boost psychic development.
