Abstract

The “cabinet” Texier : Enamelwork from Limoges and Other Curiosities Abbé Jacques-Rémi-Antoine Texier (1813-1859) is famous for his many works on Medieval art and, more specifically, on the art of goldsmiths and enameling. However there has never been an in-depth study of this ecclesiastical savant also well-known as a collector. In this paper, the author provides, on the one hand, a summary of the career of Abbé Texier as an “itinerant” man of the cloth along with an overview of his professional relations. Secondly, he reconstitutes a part of his collection of artworks. His collection, the cabinet of a knowledgeable amateur, can be divided into three main categories : champlevé enamels, painted enamels and archaeological pieces or pieces of a more anecdotal nature.
