Abstract

ALBA is the first synchrotron light source facility ever built in Spain. It is located at Cerdanyola del Vallès, a research and technological area near Barcelona. The official inauguration ceremony held in March was attended by approximately 500 people coming not only from Spain but also from many others countries. In addition to the national authorities, many national and international contributors to the ALBA project, such as the past and present members of advisory committees and consultants, attended the ceremony. That remarkable event was chaired by Mr. José Luis Rodíguez Zapatero and Mr. José Montilla, Presidents of the Spanish and Catalonia governments, respectively. They highlighted the scientific relevance of the new facility for Spain and the European regions nearby. ALBA is expected to act as a pole for scientific development and it will have a social and industrial impact through the new research possibilities and the new technological opportunities that it provides.
