Abstract

Dermatologists prescribe more oral antibiotics per clinician than all other specialties. Despite clinical guidelines that recommend limitation of long-term oral antibiotic treatments for acne, there is little evidence to guide implementation of antibiotic stewardship programs in clinical practice. This study sought to examine provider knowledge, preferences, facilitators, and barriers that underpin oral antibiotic prescriptions for acne with a duration longer than 3 months. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 30 key stakeholders: 22 academic and community dermatologists, including experts from the American Acne & Rosacea Society and acne clinical guideline authors, 4 infectious diseases physicians with expertise in antibiotic stewardship, 2 dermatology advanced practice practitioners, and 2 dermatology residents.
