Abstract

5G Networks are complex systems as they integrate technologies from multiple domains which includes RAN, MEC, 5G Core, NFV, SDN and Cloud. The network is sliced for three broad categories 5G Applications and further sliced for various verticals and MVNOs, which adds further complexity to the 5G system architecture.Taking cue from network and cloud technology which have used well defined layer architecture and virtualisation, the paper proposes a four layer architecture with a virtualisation layer offering all 5G resources abstracted and virtualized for use by the slicing layer which supports a service layer. It will help in reducing the 5G system complexity and promote independent evolution of each layer. Initial thoughts on virtualisation of various 5G resources are also presented which can be taken up for further refinement.
