Abstract
A Lax pair which linearizes the self-dual Yang-Mills (SDYM) equation is found and shown to be intimately related to the general symmetry problem for SDYM. The linear system is used to derive an invertible recursion operator that produces new infinite sequences of nonlocal symmetries and associated conservation laws for SDYM.
