Abstract

We examined an extract of the henna plant for the ability to inhibit the sickling of hemoglobin S-containing red cells upon deoxygenation in vitro and found that it could do so. Further investigation revealed that the active principle was lawsone, 2-OH-1,4-naphthoquinone, which produced an increase in the oxygen affinity of SS blood at levels as low as 1 mM of the compound but with little change in the characteristics of normal blood at this concentration.
