Abstract

This article ranges widely over the Kart dynasty, a state of Ghurid origins centered in Herat that originated in the mid-13th century as a vassal state to the Mongols and that survived until the onslaught of Timur Lang in the late 14th century. The author raises more questions than providing firm answers in discussing such issues as the ethnic makeup of the dynasty (unclear), the relative position of Turks and Tajiks in the polity (they seem to have lived in relative harmony with one another)...
