Abstract

This entry examines law, including natural and customary law, jurisprudence, and Sharia. Law is defined as a system of rules that are generally recognized by a community of people. Such rules regulate actions of members. Generally, rules must be of a general nature applicable to all similar situations, and must be enforceable by sanctions or by a punishment. Natural law is a form of philosophy of law, which regards law as being subject to higher moral principles. Customary law is a system of practices of indigenous people that have a long consistent usage. Jurisprudence is legal philosophy or theory of law. Sharia is the divine law as expressed in the Qur'an and through the example of the life of the Prophet Muhammad.
