Abstract

Abstract Mitchell’s Newspaper Press Directory (still published, now under the name of Benn’s Media Directory) was explicitly intended to help commercial traders place advertisements in the publications most suitable for their products. To that end the Directory also addressed the newspaper proprietors whose publications would carry the adverts. A detailed and spirited account of libel law as it affected newspapers and their proprietors had been given in the second edition (1847); the following is extracted from an additional section inserted at the request of users.
