Abstract
The EU Commission, the executive branch of the European institutions, has taken a number of steps to improve communication with citizens. Both in legislation and in non-binding instruments (declarations, communications, information sheets), European agencies are trying to reach the public in a more direct and transparent way by focusing on language, translation, and legal drafting. The Commission has encouraged the Directorate General for Translation (DGT) to finance studies on these issues, and in 2013 the DGT launched a study of multilingual law making,1 language and translation in international law and EU law,2 and other subjects less related to law.
