Abstract

A few years ago, I tried on several occasions to engage in dialogue with Jacques Monod, for whom I have always had great admiration. My attempts were in vain; once and for all, I had been classed among the animists, with those who believe in the necessity of man's appearance on earth. It is, therefore, quite intriguing to find myself arraigned today beside Jacques Monod. The accusation is a grave one: we outrageously glorify chance, noise, and fluctuation. The condemnation fits the accusation: an anti-scientific attitude, mental confusion, an apostle of desertion. An unequivocal verdict, but where then is the documentation?
