Abstract

The Introduction to this book posed questions concerning the general conditions for the ‘rule of law’, the relation between law and policy determined by a teleologically informed vanguard Party, between formal law and informal notions of proper behaviour (propriety) and between formal and informal law. It also asked questions about the relation of law to a particular economy (or mode of production), the functions of the police and the ‘universal’ nature of human rights. Such a complicated agenda requires an introduction more detailed than for other chapters.
