Abstract
This paper presents the edition of the autobiography (autographic manuscript) of Antonio Petito (1822-1876), Neapolitan actor and author, who was also widely known for his role as Pulcinella and as the author of comedies in dialect. This article analyses the language of autobiography, which represents a typical example of italiano popolare, in its differents levels (writing, phonetics, morphosyntax, lexicon), paying particular attention to different components: dialectal and regional elements, differences and continuities from the standard of that age, elements of spoken language and the means of acquisition of the Italian language in the social and cultural context in which the author worked, such as bureaucratic language, newspaper language, theatrical language.
