Abstract
A novel setup for Lau fringe formation is proposed that employs a grating registered as birefringence modulation in a photorefractive crystal. The system behaves as a combination of an amplitude and a birefringence phase grating, which enables us to control the visibility and provide a contrast reversion of the Lau fringes by rotating an analyzer. A theoretical approach is presented and the predicted behavior is confirmed by results obtained under different experimental conditions.
