Abstract
The dispersion relation of the [110]TA 1 phonon ( e ‖ [ 1 1 ¯ 0 ] of β 1 − C u 69.2 A l 25.4 N i 5.4 was measured extensively at 261,295, and 372 K by neutron inelastic scattering to study the lattice instability related to the martensitic phase transition. It was found that the dispersion curve has an anomalous dip around q = (2/3) q max on the [110] axis and shows a partial softening of the phonon mode. Interplanar force constant analysis revealed that the lattice dynamics of the crystal indicates dual instabilities both to the 2H and 18R type martensites. Quasielastic scattering peaks attributable to 2H and 18R martensites were observed as function of temperature, which also indicates that 2H and 18R are competing. Preliminary measurements of the [110]TA 1 phonon dispersion relation and quasielastic scattering peaks of β 1 -Cu 69 4 Al 27.1 Zn 3.5 are reported in comparison with the results of CuAlNi.
