Abstract
AbstractTwo polypeptides with a urethane group in the side chains, poly(δ‐N‐methoxycarbonyl‐L‐ornithine) (PMCO) and poly(ε‐N‐methoxycarbonyl‐L‐lysine) (PMCL), were synthesized. Their crystal structures were investigated from X‐ray diffraction. In both polymers, the molecules take the α‐helical conformation, and helices are packed in a (pseudo)hexagonal array. The lateral size of the unit cell changes reversibly with relative humidity (rh), while the axial dimension is constant irrespective of water absorption. The expansion of unit‐cell volume for rh = 100% with reference to rh = 0% was 5,8% for PMCO and 7,1% for PMCL at 20°C. In the dry state, side chains are partly associated via hydrogen bonds. The dielectric behavior of these films is discussed in terms of side‐chain interactions.
