Abstract

A detailed study of doped LaMnO3 with a fixed carrier concentration has revealed a rich phase diagram as a function of the average ionic radius of the La site 〈rA〉. The transition temperature TC, from a high-temperature paramagnetic insulator to a low-temperature ferromagnetic metal, decreases rapidly with reduced 〈rA〉. Systematic trends in the magnetotransport properties and the spin dynamics are strongly correlated with the proximity of the zero-temperature insulator phase. The general structure of this phase diagram can be understood by considering the role of static and dynamic distortions of the MnO6 octahedra and their evolution as a function of 〈rA〉.
