Abstract
The directional properties of the Born–Mayer potential associated with the interaction of the s- and d- state wave functions are shown in the framework of the model potential theory for the lattice dynamics of molybdenum and tungsten. The numerical calculations give a better understanding of the occurrence of the soft modes in both metals.
