Abstract

Latitudinal measurements of NO and O3 concentrations were carried out in June and October of 1974 and June and July of 1975 at altitudes between 18.3 and 21.3 km using in situ measuring techniques. The observed NO number densities range from 5 × 108 to 3 × 109 cm−3 and are generally consistent with other recent in situ and remote observations of NO concentrations in the lower stratosphere. The NO concentration increases steadily toward the north at 21.3 km while at 18.3 km the NO concentration exhibits a broad minimum at about 45° north latitude. Ozone measurements show the expected increase of ozone toward the pole.
