Abstract

Of the larger general textbooks on Latin American history, Hubert Herring, A History of Latin America is the most comprehensive and readable. Preston E. James, Latin America is indispensable for the essential geographical background, which is approached historically. The literature on specific aspects of the European empires in America has expanded enormously in recent years. The best succinct commentary on modern Latin American history is R. A. Humphreys, The Evolution of Modern Latin America and the same author's Liberation in South America, 1806-27:the career of James Paroissien admirably traces the course of independence in the southern half of the continent through the career of one of its participants. R. A. Humphreys, Latin American History: a guide to the literature in English lists over 2,200 entries, and provides an annotated and classified guide to the periodical and monographic literature to that date.
