Abstract

Means were sought to minimize the time required, without sacrificing accuracy and precision, for the determination of latex particle diameters and particle size distributions from electron microscope pictures. A simple instrument is described which was constructed from a center adjusting bow divider by attachment to a pocket watch. The separation of the divider points is proportionately indicated by the position of the hands on the watch. Calibration of the watch face may be made in any desired units. The device is simple to construct and easy to use. Repeated determinations of latex particle size by the same and different operators have demonstrated the reliability of the instrument in use. The processing of particle size data by electronic computer has also been demonstrated to be useful and time saving.
