Abstract

Neonatal diabetes mellitus (NDM) is a rare metabolic disorder, which is always misdiagnosed as type 1 diabetes in the past and treated with insulin all the life. It is clinically classified into two categories:transient NDM and permanent NDM. Recently, advances have been made in the understanding of the molecular mechanisms of NDM. Some specific clinical forms of NDM which are caused by heterozygous activating mutations of KCNJ11 or ABCC8 gene can be treated more effectively by oral antidiabetic drugs rather than by insulin.
