Abstract

SummaryA description is given of the distribution and characteristics of a vesicular laterite associated with the Early Cainozoic erosion surface in coastal Natal, together with the chemical and mineralogical characteristics of the soil formed by its decomposition. The relationship between cyclic erosion surfaces, the laterite, pre‐weathering, and the dominance of parent material in soil formation in coastal Natal clearly indicate the dependence of the processes of soil formation on the geomorphic history of this region.
