Abstract

Purpose: Catabolic biochemical joint changes following anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury and ACL reconstruction (ACLR) may contribute to the development of posttraumatic osteoarthritis (PTOA). Determining serum biochemical profiles that associate with early changes in articular cartilage composition is important for identifying individuals at high risk for developing PTOA following ACLR. Serum is an easily accessible fluid that can be reliably collected at traditional clinical timepoints before and after ACLR in ACL injured patients.
