Abstract

The first cases of anomalous lateral line in 3 male Common Snook, Centropomus undecimalis, in the southern Gulf of Mexico are described. On October 12, 2022, August 15, 2023 and October 11, 2023, 3 adult male Common Snook were observed with obvious lateral line anomalies during the monitoring of artisanal fisheries in the state of Campeche, Mexico. One of the specimens presented a bi-branched lateral line; another specimen exhibited 2 perpendicular tubular scales under the lateral line with a similar shape to regenerating scales, and the last specimen had a secondary tubular scale on the upper lateral line. The cause of these anomalies could be environmental stress or poor health following an injury. More intensive monitoring of the commercial fishery is needed to determine the possible causes of these anomalies.
