Abstract

• Centroidal and shear centre axes vary in tapered mono-symmetric members. • Using a web centre line axis simplifies loading and restraint data. • Using lateral deflections and twist rotations for this axis simplifies buckling energy equation. • Members are modelled as a series of tapered lines which form fans between plate edges. • Finite element program is verified for a wide range of numerical and test results. • Program can be used to explore optimisation.
