Abstract

Operative approaches for degenerative conditions of the spine include traditional posterior approaches and a newer generation of lateral approaches. These operative corridors have their roots in anterior lumbar fusion and modifications have evolved to include lateral and oblique lumbar interbody fusion. The principal advantages of lateral approaches are that they are minimally invasive, less disruptive, and provide greater access to the disc space, thus allowing for larger cage placement and theoretically greater indirect foraminal decompression with lower rates of subsidence. We describe the anterior, lateral, and oblique lumbar interbody fusion approaches, with particular emphasis on surgical techniques and complications.
