Abstract

Rheumatic heart disease (RHD) is the most common acquired heart disease affecting young people world-wide and disproportionately affects Indigenous Australians. Detection of asymptomatic (latent) RHD in children and youths using echocardiographic screening and antibiotic treatment may prevent disease progression, however better understanding of disease natural history is needed to justify this approach.
