Abstract

The case is presented of a 39 year-old right-handed woman who developed the features of a latent aphasia and flaccid dysarthria 20 years after receiving a course of radiotherapy subsequent to surgical removal of a pituitary fossa tumour. The findings of a neurological assessment, neuroradiological assessment, neurological assessment and battery of speech/language tests are described. Areas of post-irradiation calcification were identified in both the left and right thalami as well as in the region of the anterior limb of the left internal capsule, the anterior portions of the lenticular nucleus and the brain stem. The results are discussed in terms of current theories relating to the role of the dominant thalamus in language. The need for long term monitoring of the speech/language abilities of patients who have received a course of radiotherapy is indicated.
