Abstract

Virus-cell relationships in latency and the association between oncogenic viruses and transformed cells have been compared in the light of Theobald Smith's dictum that “a damaging parasite tends to become a symbiont when the relationship between it, and its native host, has existed long”. This may be particularly significant in consideration of the oncogenicity of the herpesviruses.
