Abstract
On the basis of planktic and benthic, foraminiferal assemblages the Oligocene/Miocene boundary has been recognized at the base of the Lower Bhuban Formation (Maibong-Jagdi area, Cachar Hills). The underlying Renji Formation consists exclusively of arenaceous foraminifera of Late Oligocene age.A detailed biostratigraphic analysis has lead to the identification of the Lower Bhuban Formation in both the Mikir shelf and the Schuppen Belt. Renji and Lower Bhuban Formations are separated by a conglomerate bed. The sediments of the Renji Formation have been deposited under marginal marine-deltaic conditions. Sediments of the Bhuban Formation were deposited in a shallow marine environment.
