Abstract

This chapter reveals that in May 1986, after the production of ‘Heavenly Bodies’ in Birmingham, Jamie Stewart Parker more or less decided to give up writing for the stage once he had fulfilled his outstanding commitments. Low in energy and spirits, he feared the loss of a sustaining sense of purpose. This chapter also states that when invited to Queen’s University in July 1985, Parker talked about education in a lecture, entitled ‘Dramatis Personae’. In this lecture he gave a full theoretical account of his motivation and aims as a dramatist. The following year, he would apply the precepts laid out in his lecture in his last stage play, ‘Pentecost’.
