Abstract
Coherent anti-Stokes Raman spectroscopy (CARS) normally requires the simultaneous generation of fixed and variable frequency laser beams. A convenient way to generate these is to pump a tunable dye laser with part of the output of a frequency doubled Nd/YAG laser (532.12 nm); the remainder of the Nd/YAG output provides the fixed frequency beam and the dye laser furnishes the tunable beam. Such systems have been used for a number of years for CARS studies of liquids and solutions and, with the development of more powerful Nd/YAG lasers, gases have also been investigated. The Harwell CARS system for combustion studies is similar to that described in Ref. 5.
