Abstract

Fluorescence spectra have been obtained from halogen molecules isolated in inert matrices at 15 K. Isotopic splittings have been observed for numerous bands in the Cl2 and Br2 progressions of the halogen monomer, leading to matrix values of ωe, ωexe, and T0, which are compared to the gas phase values. Fluorescence spectra of more concentrated matrix samples yielded progressions of broad, unresolved bands which have been assigned to aggregated species. A resonance Raman spectrum, including three overtones, was obtained for monomeric Br2 with 4880, 5145, and 5309 Å laser excitation, while enhancement of the Cl2 monomer fundamental was observed, with no overtones. The matrix shifts and degree of isolation in different inert matrices have also been determined.
