Abstract
Results of laser welding nominal 5/8-inch (15.9 mm) wall, 12 3/4-inch (324 mm) outer diameter X-65 steel pipe in the 2G (horizontal) and 3G (vertical-up) positions are given. Specific parameters, conditions and procedures unique to forming circumferential butt welds with a UTRC multi Kilowatt CO2 laser are described.Visual weld characteristics are discussed for face and root beads formed under different conditions and results of radiographic inspection of the welds are given. Properties of the welds including tensile, bend, nick-break and hardness are presented and discussed with respect to compliance with API Standard 1104. Finally, laser weld microstructures are shown and discussed for the various laser welds. Results of laser welding nominal 5/8-inch (15.9 mm) wall, 12 3/4-inch (324 mm) outer diameter X-65 steel pipe in the 2G (horizontal) and 3G (vertical-up) positions are given.
