Abstract
CO2 laser butt welding of a range of high strength carbon and stainless steel grades was performed in order to investigate the formability measured by the Erichsen cupping test. Sheets of different thickness were welded by placing the focal spot at different lateral and vertical positions. Sheets of different grade were welded and the resulting microstructure was analysed. The Erichsen number was found to depend on the microstructure and the geometry of the weld. A simple relationship of this dependence was formulated. Erichsen numbers relative to that of the base material were recorded ranging from 40% to 82%.CO2 laser butt welding of a range of high strength carbon and stainless steel grades was performed in order to investigate the formability measured by the Erichsen cupping test.
